Welcome to Swallow Class!
Welcome to Year 1
Class Teacher: Miss Staziker
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Adams
A very warm welcome to Swallow Class. Mrs Adams and I are looking forward to an exciting year ahead, working with you and your child. Please check our webpage regularly as I will be updating it with useful information, photographs, curriculum information and spelling lists.
We hope to help every child make a smooth transition into Year 1. Some routines will be different for the children in Year 1, however we aim to continue their independent learning through areas of provision and challenge in the classroom. Later on in the year work will involve more formal tasks, but support will be provided for those that need it. We aim to provide stimulating and enjoyable activities to challenge all of our children.
If you have any concerns, worries or questions, please do not hesitate to come and speak to me, or Mrs Adams, after the School Day. Any quick messages can be sent to me via class dojo.

Guided Reading:
In Year One guided reading is slightly different to how it is carried out in EYFS.
Your child will read as part of a group twice a week. They will bring this book home to continue reading with you. This is their guided reading book. They will also bring home an extra reader, this is a book that they will choose independently. Children need to have their reading packs (both books) in school every day.
The days on which your child will read depends on where their group is placed on the timetable, therefore some groups will read the beginning of the week and some will read towards the end. Children are encouraged to change their extra reader every morning.
Please ensure that you are reading with your child at home. As well as reading the words please ask your child questions relating to the text so that they can begin to develop their reading comprehension skills.
Homework:
Homework will be sent home every Friday and will need to be returned the following Thursday. These activities will be related to something that we have done or will be doing in class during the week. It will usually be one phonics/English piece and one maths piece. Children will also receive weekly spellings which will be tested on the following Friday.
PE
Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in School at all times. Our main PE session will be on a Thursday afternoon usually however, children may take part in PE activities throughout the week so it is important that they have a PE kit in School. Children may also have an outdoor PE kit in school if you wish.
Remember to check Class Dojo for reminders and to share your child's successes.
Polite reminders:
Please ensure uniform, PE kits and water bottles are clearly named.
Please remove any earrings and ensure that long hair is tied back.
